Mentioned in FHM...

A friend told me that this blogsite is mentioned in FHM's June issue. I immediately got my copy and scanned the pages. And here it is...

The write up is a part of the "Rock n Roll Joyride" article sponsored by Red Horse. It's subtitle is "BISROCK, CEBU'S BEST PRODUCT SINCE YOYOY VILLAME". This is what the article said:

On the surface, Cebu bands dabble in pretty much the same sounds as their Manila counterparts. But the crucial difference is how they reproduce their sound in an album. In that part of the game Cebuanos trample the competition. Case in point, Urbandub. "When we went to the studio where Urbandub recorded their albums, the equipment were antiquated," enthused Sandwich guitarist Diego Castillo. "It's amazing how they got their amazing sound."

You can credit that to their reps as a musical town courtesy of their guitar-makers, or heck just Yoyoy being there, but it is quite obvious the sound of Cebu is globally competent.

At the end of the article this blogsite is mentioned...

DYSFUNCTION

Guys, as a support for a friend of mine...please vote for DYSFUNCTION at Handuraw Awards. Here's an excerpt from their profile in myspace.

"DYSFUNCTION could mean a lot of things... things which we wouldn't want to mention here for fear of alienating or embarrassing those who suffer from it... but we aren't talking about clinical Dysfunction here... this is about The Band...

We're just a bunch of guys with varied musical tastes who found out that the other had unused instruments at home( Carlo's)... So out of sheer necessity and lack of other things to do, we decided to name ourselves......

DYSFUNCTION......

Dysfunction because of the fact that at first we never really knew what we were about. Dysfunction because one way or the other one or two of our original members would find ways not to be there when needed.....

The band was officially formed after the two original members, ourselves( CARLO the bassist and TONYO (Anthony),the frontman decided that they needed to get serious and decided to invite the current lead guitarist to play with them.....

Dominic, who had a sabbatical from playing after his former bandmate ( Butch Gamos- Urban Traffic) decided that married life is far more interesting, proved to be the key to the image of this band......"

Check their page here and vote for them here.

The original band members were a bunch of altar boys and choir members in a parish in cebu.
The band’s primary influence are songs heard over the church and contemporary christian music, other of the band’s influence varies and is quite diffrent with each other’s interests but that what makes the band’s sound and feel includes the 80’s rock, the classics,Love songs, guitar instrumental, the blues, nu-metal, smooth jazz, etc. etc. Aggressive audio consider themselves as a jam band, and mainly considers the thought of playing by feel than by memory. MC Rey Nadela was also a choir in the same church the band was in, and Brownian Method was In full swing back then, he helped the band to perform at a yearly concert in Cebu which is called Yukbo: Ang Konsyierto for 3 consecutive years and bieng the live band for his songs instead of backing tracks played at some occasions.
The band would soon start playing numerous invites within cebu. Thay have also performed at YAMAHA recitals and performing as back-up bands for the recitalists and started playing at Kahayag Café around 2003. Then began writing some songs, “Don’t Ever” is marked as the 1st song composed by the band with the leading composer Eugene Corpin and Sidney Alburo. Since then the band has been composing songs and began writing Bisaya as the primary choice of words. Pwerteng Lingina was recorded last 2005 and released as an independent record which inclueds most of the overplayed Bisrock songs in Cebu like Senior Citizen, Lingin, Tangkong and Cok-kuto.
Currently, the band has been working on their follow-up album (independent), our preview tracks for that album and what you will be expecting from the band soon. Tracks include Feeling Lang, Adoloscence, Liar Evil and First Timer. Former guitar player Archie Uy will be producing the new record and at the same time (still) playing guitars for the next album with the current Aggressive Audio guitarist Randolf Silvano. Expect the album within this year with a full length release. This new album will be recorded at Backyard Project Studios and in Wisconsin, USA with the assistance and guidance of Kerryl Demetrio. My fave bisrock songs

Senseless Song

Well, I really, really love this friggin' song from my fave bisrock band "The Ambassadors". Dunno why, but the message of its lyrics seems to laugh at me every time I sing it loud. Maybe it's because I'm very emotional and I always think that every emo stuff I see and hear is fuckin' related with my friggin' emotions. Well, it is actually "Forever", another song from that band that I first fell in love with. Someone close to my heart dedicated it to me.

Handuraw Cafe

Well, I'm kinda busy these past few days that I haven't had any time to drop by there. I really want to watch every bisrock gigs there but time is my worst enemy. I actually hope that the place will be renovated. I mean Handuraw's space seems to become smaller and smaller as bisrock followers increase in number. The cafe's management should consider a little renovation to accommodate the increasing number of bisrock fanatics who often hang out in there. Ehmmn...what else? For MP3 and Lyrics request don't hesitate to go to Immortality Forum.

Jah Bless!

Indephums

Indephums was derived from the word "Indep" meaning Independent and "hums" meaning Humans.. We have choosen this name because we the four of us (ronan, ryan, renan, & ray) are independent humans. But manawag jud gahapon mig mama and papa oi. =)
The story of the Band:

one day isang araw usa ka adlaw, around at pardo cebu city. ronan (bass)was standing along the road, suddenly renan (gtars) & ryan (drums) saw ronan and approached him and ask him to form an alternative yet heavey rock band. then the story goes on, the first vocalist of the band was thomas. later, he left the band and brylle steps into the scene. the band decided to record compositions around august 2005.
September 30, 2005, there was this band compe in a certain mall in cebu city. in there the band met ray (vox) performing for his band hunchbox. later, the band decided to replace brylle for some private reasons. After that ronan contact ray and asks if he knows someone who could sing for indephums. Ray did audition at the band. after their first jam with ray, the band let him in. Now, indephums is concentrating on BisRock (bisaya rock) composition. Thanks sa mga banda nga nag-impluwensha sa indephums to do so.

Faspitch

All pics from their MySpace Account
Formed in 2000, Faspitch is an abstract-metal quintet and yet another addition to the ever-growing Sound Of The South. Prepared, focused and united, Faspitch offers a smorgasbord of metal crashes mixed with drum & bass and old-school grunge.

Perhaps it may be too difficult to box them into a particular category but Faspitch is not one to be easily described. The band is oftentimes mistaken to be a bit of everything that falls under the current listener trend. Faspitch, however, is a band to be experienced, not just heard. Off-stage, the guys are constantly hacking over ideas on how to change their sound. On-stage, the experiment takes place, their presence always leaving an audience gaping in wonder about what just happened.

For those who are not so familiar with the band, however, the band released their first single, Staying This Way on the airwaves, later following it up with A Day Before Pisces which is gaining more ground and building up their music / fan community. This is what prompted the band to take a step further in releasing a full-length album. They inked a deal with Lighter Records on April 1, 2005. Their second single is also available in the compilation FULL VOLUME, which was released by EMI Records and includes tracks from their label mates, Urbandub and The Ambassadors. Incidentally, some listeners may already know Russell Manaloto (lead guitarist), who was kind enough to lend his talent to Urbandub after John Dinopol's accident almost a year ago. Russell now has his full attention geared towards Faspitch.
Faspitch's goal is as typical as any other band's aim to take music to the next level. They do believe, however, that in order for their crash and grind formula to work, they have to work hard. Individually, they train themselves to concentrate more on their skills as musicians. This is made clear in their newly released, year-long project and debut album The Future Of Ear Repair which is available in selected places today. The album was launched in April 21, 2006 and their new single All Under Heaven is gaining more airplay on a nationwide scale. There are great expectations that the band is going to be something massive and that they are set to rock the scene. This is something that the band knows. And they do know one other thing: Faspitch is ready.

Junior Kilat's Nationwide Fame

(All pics are from Junior Kilat's Myspace and Friendster Accounts)The moment I saw Budoy with the rest of the gang at SM last year during MTV's concert party I know it from my friggin' brain that their packin' band will make it...they will make it to the very top. Well, look at them now...ABS-CBN gives them unending appearances in their music shows, uncountable gigs all over the Philippines and millions of Bisdak err Filipino supporters and fans all over the archipelago. They made it and Kudos to Budoy, Jad, Diana, Cleofas, Bangin, Gina, Tiano and Arcie. We, Cebuanos are very proud of you...[Pakpak mga Bisaya!]

Anyways, here are some old articles about Junior Kilat...tantaran...

Jr. Kilat's signature number is titled "Original Sigbin," which means original Visayan, says Budoy. "Jr. Kilat is Jr. Kilat because of our Visayan lyrics, not necessarily Cebuano, because I sometimes use Waray."

In fact, Budoy traces his roots to Laoang, Northern Samar. One of his grade school teachers introduced him to the Waray traditions of luwa and siday. These are forms of improvised folk poetry performed during fiestas. As in the Tagalog balagtasan (poetry joust), a theme is chosen and the contestants improvise spoken or sung lyrics on the theme, much like the rap battles in "8 Mile," with the most eloquent and the wittiest winning the contest.

Given this background, Cebuano dub isn't that much of a stretch after all. "Of course, my lyrics are different because my environment is urban," says Budoy.

One song, "Hala Suyop," describes local shabu addicts who resort to selling off their household goods, including the LPG tank, for a fix. "They think they're being cool, but they're the victims," says Budoy. Unfortunately, this anti-drug song was widely misinterpreted and was actually banned in Dumaguete and Davao.

Jr.Kilat's Budoy is the worthy lieutenant of Papadom, and the band has among the most memorable and easily identifiable songs in Island Riddims: the first single culled off it, K-Fyne with its catchy Scooby-doobie-do and other playful Bisaya ramblings, and the humorous though somewhat homophobic Original Sigbin....

The Ambassadors

Note: The article below is from their Myspace Profile: http://myspace.com/theambassadors
(Pics: still from last 21st of April @Handuraw Cafe)
Not new to the music scene, The Ambassadors proved that to exist and enjoy their place only takes patience, dedication and a whole lot of fun! With punk as the root of their lifestyle, The Ambassadors are serious and comedic. They are stoic and irreverent. They are "EXPN"; the ultimate adrenaline rush. Clean vocals (Iping) mixed with crunch-guitars and choir-like backing vocals (Bai & Mark) touched with a bassist (Joseph) who is one with the drummer's (Sua) complicated pounding of the drums, makes up this melodic-punk-unpredictable force. Their debut album, CHAOTIC WORLD (released 2000) hit notes like a brick wall of sincerity, honest to the core. Songs like “A Letter From A Friend”, “Stargazer” and “Times Like This” reflected the feelings of youth, growing up, and the need to escape the tension. It was optimistic and it still is music that cures. In their second and most recent album, SIMPLE CHANGES (re-released under Lighter Records on Oct 2004), the group matures with a more progressive attack on their music. Although punk’s influence identifies the bands sound the first time you hear it, you need to sit and listen closely to their more progressive arrangements. With songs like “Reason Out”, “Senseless Song” and “We Want Change”, The Ambassadors is at its peak for new and fresh experimentation, brave enough to twist and play around their influences.

Their purpose is clear: one-time experiences to help resolve all conflict in a society that repeats its mistakes time and again. They are raw, direct, energetic and powerful. The kind of band one hopes can be "made" again some day. Join The Ambassadors mailing list at

The rise of Cebuano lyrics in music

(This is an article by Marit Stinus-Remonde published last 4th of April...here's the link)
(Pics: The Ambassadors last 21st of April at Handuraw Cafe)

Junior Kilat’s Ako si M16, FM radio station NU107’s 2005 Song of the Year, reflects the growing popularity of the use of Cebuano in contemporary alternative music. Visayan bands with an ambition to reach a nationwide audience make albums in English or Tagalog. Urbandub, Sheila & The Insects, The Ambassadors and Cueshé are examples of Visayan rock bands that have gained national fame and didn’t release Visayan or Cebuano language singles.

Cebuano is the language in which Cebuanos speak, work, think, quarrel and dream. You hear it all around you if you are in a Cebuano-speaking area. Nothing would be more natural than to hear Cebuano in the songs played on radio. As Ms. Marie Denise Cristobal, a second-year student of the University of San Carlos, puts it: The airing of Cebuano language rock songs “has added color to ordinary radio listening.” This music is known as Bisaya Rock or Bisrock.

In the past only few rock bands went against the current and did Cebuano language albums and songs. Today, however, the trend has been reversed and Cebuano lyrics have become the “X factor” that gives a local band an edge over other bands—including Manila’s top bands, as far as the Cebuano rock audience is concerned. The Ambassadors’ album Simple Changes includes one song in Cebuano. The song Ulipon is, however, only a hidden track attached after one of the album’s regular songs. You have to scan carefully the small print on the cover to find the title of the song. Yet Ulipon has become the band’s most popular song in Cebu, the song that concert-goers wait for and sing along with.

There has been a virtual wave of Bisrock songs and bands in recent months despite the fact that few local radio stations allocate significant airtime to the Cebuano rock songs. Yet, according to Ms. Cristobal’s study of the Bisrock phenomenon, 87 percent of the students she surveyed are familiar with it. While only 64 percent of the total survey group actually like the genre, 75 percent are proud of the Bisrock artists and bands. Ms. Cristobal writes in her introduction to the study that “I am very proud of our Bisaya artists. This study I am conducting is, first and foremost, my expression of support for their efforts to promote the Cebuano-Visayan dialect.”

The songs are not only liked because of their being in Cebuano. The most popular of the Bisrock bands—Aggressive Audio, Ambassadors, Blood of the Stone, Gangrene, Indephums, Jimmycycle, Mantequilla, Missing Filemon, Phylum and Timeslot—compose songs with lyrics that Ms. Cristobal’s survey group found to be “a good mix of social and political awareness, humor and romance.” A review of Missing Filemon’s album Sinesine sums up the unique effect of Bisrock: “The new songs have a subtle way of serenading the eardrums, re-arranging the brain and waking up the Bisaya in you.” (The Freeman, February 24, 2006).

Most Bisrock bands started by doing cover versions but they owe their fame in the Cebu music scene to their original compositions. For some band members, writing the songs was a way out of personal problems and frustrations. In an age where the instant gratification provided by materialism and illegal drugs has become the preferred escape valve and pastime of the depressed, the heartbroken and the bored, it is encouraging beyond compare that some young Visayans have ventured down a road less traveled by creating their own brand of music, a brand never tried or tested before.

I went to a concert and was surprised to hear the crowd sing along the Cebuano songs despite the fact that the songs are new and few radio stations play them. Obviously, the Bisaya in the Cebuanos have been awakened but not in a parochial sense. Rather, the music reflects a will and courage to be true to our free and unique selves without fear of going against convention.

Handuraw Cafe was actually jampacked with bisrock fanatics that the place became too small for all the participants. Great performances by Urbandub, Still Techisoba and OneManDown. I don't really like Anino. I can't relate to their friggin' songs. eod...
