Missing Filemon

This pic is from their friendster account

Missing Filemon started in 2002, with Eimer Tabasa on drums, Arni Aclao on bass and Insoy Niñal on guitars and vocals. The trio joined the Cebu music scene via a route seldom taken by local bands, by using the Cebuano language in their lyrics. After they were formed, the band immediately went to the studio to record their materials and finished their self-titled album before the year ended. But after the album launching, the band disappeared from the scene. The band never issued official statements of the “breakup.” As silently as it disappeared, Missing Filemon returned in the early part of 2005 and highlighted the comeback with a series of gigs in Cebu and Mindanao. It took in two new members, Cocoy Hermoso of Beverage (guitars) and Ron Capio of Curious Blossoms (bass). Arni, after reuniting with his old band The Ire and having found a new passion in digital recording, decided to help Missing Filemon in the production aspect of the band’s second album.

Chorus

Nausab na gyud ang panahon
Badlungo'ng ubang mga batan-on
Ang mga kadalagahan
magpasaway di motoo'g ginikanan
Tambagan man gani ni nanay
Maminaw pero sa dunggan ipalabay
Tambagan man gani ni tatay
molayas mopuyo og laing balay

Verse

Paminaw paminaw ibukang kalimutaw
naa koy iyawyaw ug among isangyaw
dili ni kuyaw di sad tiaw tiaw
arong kamong mga katawhan among mapukaw
kay nausab ang panahon
lahi ang kaniadto kun itandi karon
may mga garbohon may makaron ingnon
magpafeeling gwapa aron pansinon
lahi na gyud kun kamo madaga
mangarte magpanindot sa hitsura
mabati o magwapa maorang istorayaa
sudlan ang uyab uyab sa pag eskwela
inyong mama ug inyong papa
nikayod og maayo para makakwarta
aron makahuman sa inoyng pagtungha
pero inyong gibuhat ga-biga biga

Chorus

Verse
Mananghid man tinuod kun ikaw molakaw
ang bakak nga rason maoy ipatigbabaw
mahadlok kang kasab-an sa imong ginikanan
babaing buhat babaing buhat

kun sa kaugmaon ikaw masipyat
praktikal buhaton og mamurikat
imong hinumduman kun ikaw mapamabdusan
sa uyab mong way batasan ikaw buwagan

Chorus

Verse

Pa-virgin virgin pero wang wang na di ay

pero ang gugma sa lalaki tinuod ba kaha?
naa ra na nimo magpada ka's tama

Senseless Song by The Ambassadors

Ehmmn...I'm kinda brokenhearted these days...so here's a song from my fave band...tantaran...
____________________

Senseless Song
by The Ambassadors

I'll sing you this song
Filled with words that make no sense
Played with chords that never ends
Please just give me one more chance
To sing this song to youTo sing to you this song
This senseless...

Never thought that i'd be
Captured by your smile
You rock my world
Without youI can't imagine life
I close my eyes
Get enough faith
That burns me
Deep down inside
So i pick up my guitar
And i sing this senseless song

Well this song i sing
With joy it may bring
It's all about a story
Of a hopeless romantic fool
And for singing along
I will leave you with this song
Coz i may pass away
But this song will always be
With you

You'll never miss the water
Till the well is dry
You'll never miss the moments
Till it pass you by
You'll never miss the time
While i'm still here
You'll never miss me
Till i disappear

[ repeat * except last two words ]

Coz i may pass away
But my heart will always be
With you

Junior Kilat's Nationwide Fame

(All pics are from Junior Kilat's Myspace and Friendster Accounts)The moment I saw Budoy with the rest of the gang at SM last year during MTV's concert party I know it from my friggin' brain that their packin' band will make it...they will make it to the very top. Well, look at them now...ABS-CBN gives them unending appearances in their music shows, uncountable gigs all over the Philippines and millions of Bisdak err Filipino supporters and fans all over the archipelago. They made it and Kudos to Budoy, Jad, Diana, Cleofas, Bangin, Gina, Tiano and Arcie. We, Cebuanos are very proud of you...[Pakpak mga Bisaya!]

Anyways, here are some old articles about Junior Kilat...tantaran...

Jr. Kilat's signature number is titled "Original Sigbin," which means original Visayan, says Budoy. "Jr. Kilat is Jr. Kilat because of our Visayan lyrics, not necessarily Cebuano, because I sometimes use Waray."

In fact, Budoy traces his roots to Laoang, Northern Samar. One of his grade school teachers introduced him to the Waray traditions of luwa and siday. These are forms of improvised folk poetry performed during fiestas. As in the Tagalog balagtasan (poetry joust), a theme is chosen and the contestants improvise spoken or sung lyrics on the theme, much like the rap battles in "8 Mile," with the most eloquent and the wittiest winning the contest.

Given this background, Cebuano dub isn't that much of a stretch after all. "Of course, my lyrics are different because my environment is urban," says Budoy.

One song, "Hala Suyop," describes local shabu addicts who resort to selling off their household goods, including the LPG tank, for a fix. "They think they're being cool, but they're the victims," says Budoy. Unfortunately, this anti-drug song was widely misinterpreted and was actually banned in Dumaguete and Davao.

Jr.Kilat's Budoy is the worthy lieutenant of Papadom, and the band has among the most memorable and easily identifiable songs in Island Riddims: the first single culled off it, K-Fyne with its catchy Scooby-doobie-do and other playful Bisaya ramblings, and the humorous though somewhat homophobic Original Sigbin....

The Handuraw Cafe

(Pics and articles from www.handuraw.com)
Imagining Handuraw
SunStar CebuWednesday, September 21, 2005(http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/ceb/2005/09/21/life/imagining.handuraw.html)
Imagine a bar where dreadlocked rastafarians jam in the same space as head-banging metal rockers. Only in Cebu will you find such a place.
Hidden for more than a year now in the shadow of the more popular Kahayag Acoustic Café is Handuraw, named after an old Cebuano word meaning “the power to imagine”. Handuraw is literally behind Kahayag in the old Coaco building at M.J.Cuenco, Mabolo--just as cozy and artsy, with large paintings on the walls and potted plants in the corners, but with lots more room for conversation, or even several rounds of board games. But what makes Handuraw truly different from its sister café is in what you dare to imagine.

On weekdays, the family-owned Handuraw seems like a typical restaurant which offices or clubs can book for meetings, parties, or launchings. A room can be reserved for small-group seminars and workshops. The 24-hour internet café is conveniently available for business-related services like email, scanning or printing.

But on weekends, Handuraw takes on a totally different character. The small function room becomes a personal karaoke studio. The internet café becomes a network gaming center. The jamming studio beside it buzzes with one band after another practicing for gigs. Even the couch in the foyer becomes an alternative hang-out for spill-overs. And the Handuraw Learning and Leisure Café is transformed into the Handuraw Events Café.
Handuraw is the Cebuano word for "the power to imagine" is the first learning and leisure café in Cebu, combining business and entertainment facilities under one roof. Function rooms, a jamming studio, internet café, karaoke studio are some of the services available. Known for its great tasting thin crust pizzas, Handuraw can also serve as your exclusive party venue.
We are located at the Ground Floor Sea Orient (formerly COACO) Building, M.J. Cuenco Avenue, Mabolo, Cebu City.

The Ambassadors

Note: The article below is from their Myspace Profile: http://myspace.com/theambassadors
(Pics: still from last 21st of April @Handuraw Cafe)
Not new to the music scene, The Ambassadors proved that to exist and enjoy their place only takes patience, dedication and a whole lot of fun! With punk as the root of their lifestyle, The Ambassadors are serious and comedic. They are stoic and irreverent. They are "EXPN"; the ultimate adrenaline rush. Clean vocals (Iping) mixed with crunch-guitars and choir-like backing vocals (Bai & Mark) touched with a bassist (Joseph) who is one with the drummer's (Sua) complicated pounding of the drums, makes up this melodic-punk-unpredictable force. Their debut album, CHAOTIC WORLD (released 2000) hit notes like a brick wall of sincerity, honest to the core. Songs like “A Letter From A Friend”, “Stargazer” and “Times Like This” reflected the feelings of youth, growing up, and the need to escape the tension. It was optimistic and it still is music that cures. In their second and most recent album, SIMPLE CHANGES (re-released under Lighter Records on Oct 2004), the group matures with a more progressive attack on their music. Although punk’s influence identifies the bands sound the first time you hear it, you need to sit and listen closely to their more progressive arrangements. With songs like “Reason Out”, “Senseless Song” and “We Want Change”, The Ambassadors is at its peak for new and fresh experimentation, brave enough to twist and play around their influences.

Their purpose is clear: one-time experiences to help resolve all conflict in a society that repeats its mistakes time and again. They are raw, direct, energetic and powerful. The kind of band one hopes can be "made" again some day. Join The Ambassadors mailing list at

The rise of Cebuano lyrics in music

(This is an article by Marit Stinus-Remonde published last 4th of April...here's the link)
(Pics: The Ambassadors last 21st of April at Handuraw Cafe)

Junior Kilat’s Ako si M16, FM radio station NU107’s 2005 Song of the Year, reflects the growing popularity of the use of Cebuano in contemporary alternative music. Visayan bands with an ambition to reach a nationwide audience make albums in English or Tagalog. Urbandub, Sheila & The Insects, The Ambassadors and Cueshé are examples of Visayan rock bands that have gained national fame and didn’t release Visayan or Cebuano language singles.

Cebuano is the language in which Cebuanos speak, work, think, quarrel and dream. You hear it all around you if you are in a Cebuano-speaking area. Nothing would be more natural than to hear Cebuano in the songs played on radio. As Ms. Marie Denise Cristobal, a second-year student of the University of San Carlos, puts it: The airing of Cebuano language rock songs “has added color to ordinary radio listening.” This music is known as Bisaya Rock or Bisrock.

In the past only few rock bands went against the current and did Cebuano language albums and songs. Today, however, the trend has been reversed and Cebuano lyrics have become the “X factor” that gives a local band an edge over other bands—including Manila’s top bands, as far as the Cebuano rock audience is concerned. The Ambassadors’ album Simple Changes includes one song in Cebuano. The song Ulipon is, however, only a hidden track attached after one of the album’s regular songs. You have to scan carefully the small print on the cover to find the title of the song. Yet Ulipon has become the band’s most popular song in Cebu, the song that concert-goers wait for and sing along with.

There has been a virtual wave of Bisrock songs and bands in recent months despite the fact that few local radio stations allocate significant airtime to the Cebuano rock songs. Yet, according to Ms. Cristobal’s study of the Bisrock phenomenon, 87 percent of the students she surveyed are familiar with it. While only 64 percent of the total survey group actually like the genre, 75 percent are proud of the Bisrock artists and bands. Ms. Cristobal writes in her introduction to the study that “I am very proud of our Bisaya artists. This study I am conducting is, first and foremost, my expression of support for their efforts to promote the Cebuano-Visayan dialect.”

The songs are not only liked because of their being in Cebuano. The most popular of the Bisrock bands—Aggressive Audio, Ambassadors, Blood of the Stone, Gangrene, Indephums, Jimmycycle, Mantequilla, Missing Filemon, Phylum and Timeslot—compose songs with lyrics that Ms. Cristobal’s survey group found to be “a good mix of social and political awareness, humor and romance.” A review of Missing Filemon’s album Sinesine sums up the unique effect of Bisrock: “The new songs have a subtle way of serenading the eardrums, re-arranging the brain and waking up the Bisaya in you.” (The Freeman, February 24, 2006).

Most Bisrock bands started by doing cover versions but they owe their fame in the Cebu music scene to their original compositions. For some band members, writing the songs was a way out of personal problems and frustrations. In an age where the instant gratification provided by materialism and illegal drugs has become the preferred escape valve and pastime of the depressed, the heartbroken and the bored, it is encouraging beyond compare that some young Visayans have ventured down a road less traveled by creating their own brand of music, a brand never tried or tested before.

I went to a concert and was surprised to hear the crowd sing along the Cebuano songs despite the fact that the songs are new and few radio stations play them. Obviously, the Bisaya in the Cebuanos have been awakened but not in a parochial sense. Rather, the music reflects a will and courage to be true to our free and unique selves without fear of going against convention.

*********
Handuraw Cafe was actually jampacked with bisrock fanatics that the place became too small for all the participants. Great performances by Urbandub, Still Techisoba and OneManDown. I don't really like Anino. I can't relate to their friggin' songs. eod...
